    Types of verbal interaction with instructable robots

    An instructable robot is one that accepts instruction in some natural language such as English and uses that instruction to extend its basic repertoire of actions. Such robots are quite different in conception from autonomously intelligent robots, which provide the impetus for much of the research on inference and planning in artificial intelligence. Examined here are the significant problem areas in the design of robots that learn from vebal instruction. Examples are drawn primarily from our earlier work on instructable robots and recent work on the Robotic Aid for the physically disabled. Natural-language understanding by machines is discussed as well as in the possibilities and limits of verbal instruction. The core problem of verbal instruction, namely, how to achieve specific concrete action in the robot in response to commands that express general intentions, is considered, as are two major challenges to instructability: achieving appropriate real-time behavior in the robot, and extending the robot's language capabilities

    A natural-language interface to a mobile robot

    The present work on robot instructability is based on an ongoing effort to apply modern manipulation technology to serve the needs of the handicapped. The Stanford/VA Robotic Aid is a mobile manipulation system that is being developed to assist severely disabled persons (quadriplegics) in performing simple activities of everyday living in a homelike, unstructured environment. It consists of two major components: a nine degree-of-freedom manipulator and a stationary control console. In the work presented here, only the motions of the Robotic Aid's omnidirectional motion base have been considered, i.e., the six degrees of freedom of the arm and gripper have been ignored. The goal has been to develop some basic software tools for commanding the robot's motions in an enclosed room containing a few objects such as tables, chairs, and rugs. In the present work, the environmental model takes the form of a two-dimensional map with objects represented by polygons. Admittedly, such a highly simplified scheme bears little resemblance to the elaborate cognitive models of reality that are used in normal human discourse. In particular, the polygonal model is given a priori and does not contain any perceptual elements: there is no polygon sensor on board the mobile robot

    Citizenship rights for immigrants. National political processes and cross-national convergence in Western Europe, 1980–2008

    Immigrant citizenship rights in the nation-state reference both theories of cross-national convergence and the resilience of national political processes. This article investigates European countries' attribution of rights to immigrants: Have these rights become more inclusive and more similar across countries? Are they affected by EU membership, the role of the judiciary, the party in power, the size of the immigrant electorate, or pressure exerted by anti-immigrant parties? Original data on 10 European countries, 1980-2008, reveal no evidence for cross-national convergence. Rights tended to become more inclusive until 2002, but stagnated afterward. Electoral changes drive these trends: growth of the immigrant electorate led to expansion, but countermobilization by right-wing parties slowed or reversed liberalizations. These electoral mechanisms are in turn shaped by long-standing policy traditions, leading to strong path dependence and the reproduction of preexisting cross-national differences. © 2012 by The University of Chicago.     Surface Studies of Duodenal Lesions Induced by Thoracic Irradiation

    Acute duodenal ulcers are produced in mice as a remote ( abscopal ) effect of irradiation to the lower mediastinum. Such lesions have been examined with scanning electron microscopy at 5, 8 and 28 days after irradiation with 18 Gy of X-rays. All the ulcers occur within the first 1 cm long segment of the duodenum which is endowed with Brunner\u27s glands. The single lesions vary in size, shape and position. The damaged area often includes much of the duodenal circumference and is distinguished by conical or rudimentary villi, or even by the complete absence of villi. In contrast, around the periphery of the ulcer the villi are mostly vertical. Although the floor of these lesions appears to be covered with a continuous epithelial layer, during the first 4 weeks after irradiation the severity of the focal duodenal damage seems to increase gradually with time. The lesions have been compared with specimens from unirradiated mice and also with samples taken 3 days after partial thoracic irradiation when little damage is seen. The pattern of fully developed duodenal lesions differs greatly from that seen after direct irradiation where damage has not included localised ulceration in the samples of jejunum so far examined. The lesions induced by partial thoracic irradiation may be related to radiation injury to vascular or autonomic nerve targets in the lower mediastinum. Such injury could result in malfunction of the pyloric sphincter or could alter the secretion by Brunner\u27s glands and thus lead to duodenal ulceration

    The relationship between regional variations in blood flow and histology in a transplanted rat fibrosarcoma

    The regional distribution of blood flow to the LBDS1 fibrosarcoma, transplanted into the subcutaneous site in rats, was investigated using the readily diffusible compound 14C-iodo-antipyrine (14C-IAP). Quantitative autoradiography was used to establish absolute values of specific blood flow F for 100 X 100 X 20 microns adjacent tissue volumes of the unperturbed tumour. Mean blood flow to whole tumours was found to decrease with increase in tumour size. This relationship was abolished if blood flow was only measured in sections cut from the periphery of the tumours. Detailed analysis of a sub-group of tumours showed that blood flow to individual tumours was heterogeneous. The range of blood flow was large, indicating that mean blood flow to a whole tumour is a poor reflection of the blood perfusion pattern of that tumour. Necrotic tumour regions were usually very poorly perfused. With the exception of the smallest tumours studied, blood flow was lower in the centre of tumours than in the periphery. Necrosis also tended to develop centrally. However, the peripheral to central gradient of blood flow was apparent even when densely cellular, viable tumour regions and necrotic regions were analysed separately. The decrease in blood flow with tumour size was also apparent in densely cellular, viable tumour regions when analysed separately. Qualitative comparison of tumour histology and regional blood flow showed that there were areas of very low blood flow associated with viable tumour regions. Less common were areas of rather high blood flow associated with necrotic tumour regions. A complicated relationship exists between tumour histology and blood flow. The quantitative autoradiography technique is suitable for investigating the most poorly perfused and the most well perfused viable fractions of animal tumours which may limit the efficacy of different types of therapy
